What are the basic requirements to become a driver?
You must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid U.S. driver's license with a clean driving record, and be eligible to work in the United States. You'll also need access to a reliable, insured vehicle, a smartphone for communication and route tracking, and you must pass a background and drug screening plus complete our online safety and compliance course.
Is valid U.S. work authorization required?
Yes. A valid and current U.S. work authorization is a non-negotiable legal requirement. Expired permits are not accepted. Route A complies with all applicable employment laws and equal opportunity regulations.
What does the English proficiency test consist of?
It's an official online test, basic level, that you take with your camera on. It's required by the school district (not by Route A) for every driver, and it's part of the application process before you're assigned a route.
What happens if I don't pass the English test?
If you don't pass, we can't move forward with your application for this position, since it's a requirement set directly by the school district. Our team will let you know the result and next steps as soon as they're available.
How long does the English test take?
The test itself usually takes a short amount of time to complete online. Our team will send you the link and instructions after your application is reviewed, along with a deadline to complete it.
Do I need a special license (CDL)?
No. A CDL is not required: a standard driver's license is sufficient.
Do I need my own vehicle?
Yes. Drivers use their own personal vehicle, which must be a 4-door car from 2016 or newer and meet our safety and insurance requirements.
What type of insurance do I need?
Personal auto insurance that meets your state's minimum requirements.
Can I apply if I have points on my license?
We run a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check as part of onboarding. If there are pending issues on your record, you won't be eligible to drive.
What does a typical workday look like?
Drivers complete morning and afternoon routes, transporting students according to their school's schedule (as early as 6am and as late as 5pm). Once your route is complete, your time is your own.
Is this full-time or part-time work?
This is part-time, seasonal work that follows the school calendar. Most drivers average 2–4 hours per day depending on their assigned trips, with additional hours sometimes available for rescue routes.
Can I choose my schedule?
You choose how many routes to take based on your availability and what's open in your district, and you decide whether to accept an offered route. But you can't pick specific days, once accepted, a route runs every school day, Monday through Friday, for the rest of the school year.
Are weekends or holidays required?
No. Routes follow the school district calendar: no weekends, no school holidays.
How much do drivers get paid?
Pay is a flat rate per trip, so it's shaped by the route you choose. Drivers who add more stops, like a few students in the morning and a few more in the afternoon, cover more ground and get more out of every week. Ask your recruiter about building the route that works best for you.
How often do drivers get paid?
Payments are issued weekly.
Do I get reimbursed for gas or vehicle maintenance?
No. As an independent contractor, gas and vehicle maintenance are your responsibility and are not reimbursed separately. Your per-trip rate covers mileage for both legs of the trip, pickup to school and school to drop-off.
Are there bonuses for referrals?
Yes. You can earn a referral bonus when someone you refer completes onboarding in select areas.
Do I get paid during the summer?
This is seasonal work tied to the school calendar. During summer and school breaks, we review available summer routes and assign them based on each district's availability, and it all depends on that school district's needs at the time. If a route opens up in your zone, our team will reach out directly.
Is training provided?
Yes. All drivers complete onboarding training covering app usage, safety protocols, pick-up/drop-off procedures, and emergency and incident reporting.
Do drivers receive ongoing coaching?
Yes. We provide bi-weekly training sessions, an on-call app support team, and a team manager to help you meet performance standards.
Do I need a smartphone?
Yes. Our app is required for routing, attendance tracking, and communication.
What if I have issues with the app?
Our support team is available to help you troubleshoot any app issues.
Do I need mobile data?
Yes, an active data plan is needed for the app to function properly during your routes.
What safety protocols must drivers follow?
Drivers follow all federal, state, local, and district safety guidelines, including proper student securement, safe driving practices, incident reporting, and no unauthorized passengers.
What does the background check involve?
All drivers must complete a standard background check and a drug test before starting routes. These are required by the school districts we partner with to ensure the safety of every student.
Can I use a family member as a monitor?
Yes, as long as they meet eligibility requirements and complete onboarding.

Monitors must be at least 21 years old, pass a background check, and complete required training.
Do monitors get paid?
Yes. Monitors receive their own separate per-trip rate.
How are routes assigned?
Your team manager offers available routes based on your availability, location, and district needs.
Can I request a different route?
Yes, as long as availability allows. Requests are reviewed by your manager and the school district.
What if a student is a no-show?
You're paid in full for a no-show, as well as for a cancellation made up to one hour before the trip is scheduled to start.
What happens after I submit the form?
Our team reviews your application and contacts you within 24–48 hours by phone or email. We'll walk you through the next steps: vehicle inspection, background check, training, and route assignment.
How long does onboarding take?
Onboarding timelines vary by state, but typically take about 10 business days.
How do I refer someone?

Can I work in multiple districts?
Yes, as long as routes are available, you meet all eligibility criteria, and the schedules don't conflict.
Can I change or alternate vehicles as needed?
No. Both you and your vehicle go through a compliance process to meet safety standards. If you need to change vehicles, notify your manager and provide documentation so the new vehicle can be reviewed and approved.
